LOWDOWN:
From the directors of the hit film Open Water, Silent House is a uniquely unsettling horror thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Sarah, a young woman who finds herself sealed inside her family's secluded lake house. With no contact to the outside world, and no way out, panic turns to terror to terror as events become increasingly ominous in and around the house. Directed by filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, Silent House uses meticulous camera choreography to take the audience on a tension-filled, real time journey, experienced in a single uninterrupted shot.
Executed perfectly in one long, unblinking take (though you can tell the edit points; the directors admit they filmed it in 10-minute chunks), Silent House is a visceral experience in spookiness, tethered to the brilliant actress Elizabeth Olsen that unfolds in real time. It's your standard scary house movie but pretty much told from Sarah's perspective. This film will mess with your mind...so beware for twists and turns. You can tell a freak-out is imminent, and it’s rattlingly effective for a good hour, until they ape an absurd sequence with a Polaroid camera’s intermittent flash as the only light source, and tie it all up with catastrophic back story. Olsen’s brilliantly nervy and detailed performance deserved a flick that knew how to house it.
The most impressive thing about Silent House is that it is filmed in one continuous shot. No editing leaves room for some impressive feets of on screen staging that move us through the length of the film. And at it's heart lies the emotive and expressive face of the talented Elizabeth Olsen who deserves a huge applause and a curtain call.
