UPDATE: DC reveals character to"come out of the closet"

DC Comics has just revealed the identity of the iconic character to announce their sexuality.

DC Comics has announced that the "Green Lantern" known as Alan Scott will "come out of the closet." A source at DC Comics at the recently Phoenix Comic-Con confirmed the news. DC Comics will be reintroducing Alan Scott in the "New 52" reboot as a Gay superhero in an upcoming issue. Alan Scott was first reintroduced in Earth-2 #1 that was released two weeks ago.

Alan Scott, the orignal "Green Lantern" who was created by Martin Nodell, and first written with Bill Finger in 1940.
Green Lantern was originally a mystically based superhero, whose powers were derived from the flame of a magic lamp and he also became an original member of the Justice Society of America.
This comes to a suprise to me honestly, at first when I heard of the news but due to the coming wedding between Marvel Comic's Northstar and his boyfriend. Its understandable that DC Comics is also open to the idea of having openly gay or lesbian superheroes in their world. For someone who also has a Gay relative in their family, i'm all for it and is curious to where this take will lead up to.
